Cold Weather Alert: Keep Your Fish Safe This Week!

Protect Your Aquarium & Pond Fish During Miami’s Cold Snap

Cold weather is returning to Miami, and your fish need extra care to stay safe! With lows dropping into the upper 40s on Friday and Saturday night and daytime highs barely reaching the 60s, it’s important to take precautions—especially for tropical and pond fish.

Aquarium Fish Cold Weather Care

  • Check Your Heater: Ensure your aquarium heater is working properly and set between 74-80°F for tropical fish.
  • Monitor Water Temperature: Use a reliable thermometer to ensure stable conditions.
  • Insulate Your Tank: Reduce heat loss by covering the back and sides with insulation (like foam board or towels).
  • Limit Feeding: Fish metabolism slows in cooler temperatures, so avoid overfeeding.
  • Maintain Stable Room Temperature: Keep aquariums away from drafts, windows, and doors to prevent sudden temperature drops.

Pond Fish (Koi & Goldfish) Cold Weather Care

  • Use a Pond Heater or De-Icer: Prevent excessive cooling by using a heater if your pond is small or shallow.
  • Stop Feeding Below 50°F: Fish enter a semi-dormant state and can’t digest food properly in colder temperatures.
  • Add Floating Covers: Use pond covers or floating plants to help retain heat.
  • Ensure Proper Oxygenation: Keep a section of the pond’s surface open to maintain gas exchange and prevent oxygen depletion.
